Abstract:
In this paper we study the influence of the addition of
small amounts of a ferrofluid to thermosetting polymers.
Two resin systems were considered: one was based on a polyepoxy prepolymer/diamine hardener and the other on an
unsturated polyester/styrene mixture. The curing behaviour of the modified systems was researched in terms of their time to gel and exhotermic peak
temperatures. The fully cured systems were then characterized
by scanning electronic microscopy (SEM) to typify the
nanoparticle distribution in the polymer network. Dynamic
mechanical thermal analysis was also performed to assess
morphological and mechanical properties. Finally, their
mechanical performance was determined by flexural
quasi-static testing and Charpy impact testing.
